Last updated 2 October 2026. New: receipt scan, daily streak, sharing alerts, and more optional summary details.
The short version
Tereka (once called Financial Cups) has no database of users. Your salary, plan and spending stay on your device. If you sign in, they also go to your own Google Drive.
Only three things can reach us. None of them says who you are:
- anonymous usage counts, like "one plan was saved today". You can switch these off.
- an anonymous monthly summary. We get it only if you turn it on.
- a push address for daily reminders, with the date you last checked in. Only if you turn reminders on.
What stays on your device
Your plan and spends are saved in your browser on this device. If you clear your browser data, they are deleted. You can download a CSV copy any time from the tracker.
Your daily streak stays on this device only. It shows the days you logged a spend or tapped No spend today. It does not go to your Google Sheet. It is never sent to us. (If you turn on reminders, we get only the date you last checked in. See below.)
Receipt scan and shared alerts
When you tap Scan a receipt, your own device reads the photo in the browser. The photo and its text are never uploaded, to us or anyone.
The first time, your browser downloads free reading software. This is Tesseract.js with its English data, about 5 MB. It comes from the jsDelivr network, like any file a web page loads. No part of your photo goes with that download.
On Android, if you install Tereka, you can share a bank alert to it. Your phone reads the text and fills in the log form. Nothing is saved until you tap Log spending. The text is cleared from the address bar at once.
Google Sheets (optional)
If you tap Connect Google Sheets, you sign in with Google. You give Tereka the drive.file permission. With it, Tereka can create one spreadsheet in your Google Drive. It can read and write only spreadsheets it created. It cannot see any other file in your Drive.
Your browser talks to Google directly. The short-lived access token stays in memory only. It is thrown away when you close the page. We never get your Google data or your token.
You can remove access any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions. Your spreadsheet stays in your Drive. It is still yours.
Email auto-import (optional, you set it up)
You can add a short script to your own Tereka Google Sheet. Every hour it reads new bank debit-alert emails in your Gmail and adds them to your sheet. It runs only inside your Google account. Tereka never sees your email, and the script sends nothing anywhere. It keeps only the amount, the date and a short description. You can read every line of it, stop it, or delete it at any time. How it works.
Voice logging
When you tap the microphone, your browser turns your words into text. Tereka only reads that text on your device to find the amount and what it was for. Some browsers use their maker's speech service to do this. If you'd rather not, type instead.
Daily reminders (optional, off until you turn them on)
If you turn on reminders, your browser gives this device a push address. That address is a long random link from Google, Apple, Mozilla or Microsoft. Only their service can use it to reach your device. We keep it in our private Google Sheet with three other things: the hour you picked, your time zone, and the date you last checked in. The date is there so we don't remind you on days you already checked in. We don't keep your name, your plan or any amounts with it.
Once an hour, a small scheduled job (run on GitHub, where Tereka's code lives) asks our sheet which devices are due and sends their reminders. The job keeps nothing. Turn reminders off in Tereka and we delete your push address. Block notifications in your browser and it is deleted the next time a reminder fails.
Use of Google user data
Tereka's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
We use this data only to show your budget and spending to you. We never sell it, share it or use it for ads.
Anonymous insights (optional, off by default)
If you tick Share my anonymous monthly summary, once a month your device sends us:
- your state and age band. You choose them.
- your monthly take-home pay as a band, like "200k–400k". Never the exact amount.
- the share of take-home you planned for each cup. Also how much of each cup you used, as a percentage.
- when in the month you spent. We split the month into four weeks: days 1–7, 8–14, 15–21, 22–end. For each week, we get its share of the month's spending, in whole percent. We also get the cup that took the most that week. Your device works this out. No amounts, dates, shop names or notes are sent.
- how many spends you logged that month.
- a random ID made on your device. It lets us count you once a month.
Optional details. You can add any of these, or none. You pick each one from a fixed list. Each list has "Prefer not to say".
- the kind of work you do. For example "Banking & finance", "Student" or "NYSC / corps member".
- the area you live in and the area you work in. For example "Lagos: Yaba" or "Oyo: capital city", or "Works from home". These come from a list. They are never GPS, never your street, never your address. Tereka never asks your device for its location.
We never get your name, email or Google account. We never get exact naira amounts. We never get what you bought or when. The summaries are stored in a Google Sheet that only Tereka can open.
Why: we publish free reports on how Nigerians plan and spend. For example by state, pay band, kind of work or area. They also help us improve the suggested splits.
We only publish totals and averages for groups of 50 people or more. A smaller group is left out or merged with others. We never mix state, age band and pay band in one table. So no table can narrow down to a few people. We never publish one person's summary. We never sell the summaries.
Your choice: untick the box to stop sharing any time. Stop and delete what I've shared removes every summary linked to your device's random ID. Our legal basis is your consent, under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.
Anonymous usage counts (on unless you or your browser say no)
We want to know if Tereka is helping anyone. So we count how often a few things happen. When one happens, your browser sends only its name. Our counter adds 1 to that day's total.
Nothing else is sent. No ID, no cookie, no name, no email, no page address, no device details. The one amount we get is explained below.
What we count:
- the home page being opened;
- a plan being created or saved;
- the PDF being downloaded;
- a share image, payday status image or Cup Grid being made;
- a Google Sheet being connected;
- the first spend logged in a month;
- Year in Cups being opened;
- a planner button tapped on a salary page;
- the Detty December planner being used;
- the app being opened in a month, and if the plan is from an earlier month;
- a receipt being scanned. Only that it happened: never the photo, the amount or the shop;
- No spend today being tapped.
Some things we count only once a month. For these, your device remembers the month it last counted them, like 2026-10. That is the only thing it keeps for counting. It is not an ID: everyone has the same value.
The counts are stored as daily totals in a Google Sheet only Tereka can open. Our counter never stores your IP address. Google runs the counter. Google and our host see the request like any web request (see Hosting below).
We use the totals to show how Tereka is used, for example to funders. We share them only as totals for a week or a month.
Your choice: your browser may have Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control on. Then we count nothing. You can also switch counts off here. The setting is kept on this device.
Usage counts are not switched on for this site.
Salaries planned (one running total)
Tereka shows how much salary people have planned with it. For example, "₦1 billion in salaries planned".
To count this, your browser sends your monthly salary when you save a plan. It is rounded to the nearest ₦10,000, and never more than ₦20 million. It goes with the "plan saved" count above. Your device sends it at most once a calendar month. If you edit your plan again that month, nothing more is sent.
Our counter adds the amount to that day's total and to one running total. It is not stored on its own. Nothing ties it to you. No ID, no name, no other plan details, no IP address.
Tereka never holds, moves or sees your money. This is just a sum of numbers typed into a planner.
We also show a count like "1,240 salary plans made on Tereka". This is the running total of the "plan created" count above. It counts plans, not people. Nothing extra is sent for it.
The same switch above turns this off. It is also off when your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control.
We may switch on our host's own page-view stats (Vercel Web Analytics). If we do, they use no cookies and do not store your IP address. They follow the same switch and browser settings. A change takes effect on your next visit.
No count can be linked to a person, so we treat these totals as anonymous. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in knowing if the free service works. This is under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023. You can object any time with the switch above.
Hosting
The site is static. Our hosting provider serves it. They may keep standard server logs for security, such as IP address and pages requested.
