Rent relief: your tax gets lighter

The Nigeria Tax Act 2025 gives you rent relief. 20% of the rent you pay each year comes off your taxable income. The most is ₦500,000. Add your salary to see what that adds to your take-home pay.

Make rent a cup, not a shock

In Tereka, you fill your Savings cup every payday. So rent day is just another day. Your Living costs cup covers food, transport and bills while it fills.

Free, no account. Tereka never holds your money.

    Questions

How do I save for yearly rent in Lagos?

Add your yearly rent and any fees. Count the paydays you have before rent is due. Divide the total by that number. Move that amount to a separate savings pocket the day your salary lands. Then rent never fights your everyday spending.

What is rent relief under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025?

This applies from 1 January 2026. 20% of the rent you pay each year comes off your taxable income. Taxable income is the part of your pay that gets taxed. The most that comes off is ₦500,000. It lowers your tax, not your rent. Keep your rent receipts or tenancy agreement as proof. Tell your employer or tax office so they apply it. Agency, legal and caution fees are not rent. So we leave them out of the relief.

Is the Lagos Tenancy Bill law yet?

As of September 2026, it was still a bill, not law. Reports say it would limit advance rent and agency fees. But it must be passed and signed first. Until then, your agreement with the landlord or agent decides what you pay.

Should I count the caution deposit?

Yes, if you must pay it before you get the keys. It should come back when you leave. When it does, put it straight back into your Savings cup.
